Challenge Hour - Session 2

Goals for Session 2 - Finalize topic choice/Create a plan to accomplish project goals

Session 2:  Creating a Plan

Send out e-mail 1 or 2 days before class reminding students to complete and bring back the survey and project form

Begin class with a quick pep talk about projects.  Emphasize the excitement that you will feel when you've found the right project.

Explain today's goal:  to make a plan that will help you complete your project.

Demonstrate the process with an actual project using Elmo.

1)  Start by brainstorming every step you can think of.  (Use a brightly colored blank paper for this step, and don't worry about the order of steps right now.  Just think about everything you'll need to learn, research, and actually do and write it down.)

2)  Next, label everything with a 1, 2, or 3 depending on the order you'll need to do it.  One's are the things you need to learn or research in order to get started.  Three's are the things you need to do to prepare your final product.  Two's are the actual work in the middle.

3)  Write the steps onto the "Challenge Hour Plan" handout, in the order that you'll need to do them.  Fill in the "Home or School" column depending on where you'll need to work on that step.  Add in the supplies or resources you'll need for that step.  The last column is to check off when that step is done.

Have the students work together at tables on the initial brainstorming process, with a parent volunteer working with each group.  Then complete the "Challenge Hour Plan."

(If there are students who still haven't picked a topic, have those kids work together with one parent to finalize choice.  Then they can more onto the planning step.)

When finished, get a file folder, label it with name, and put paperwork inside.

If there's time left, students can:
--start first steps, if they have what they need
--decorate their folders if they don't
